Henry Eicholtz Leman made many rifles during his 53 year career, from 1834 until 1887, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Although Leman made many styles of rifles, perhaps he is best known for his Indian Trade Rifles. This reproduction of Henry Leman's Indian Trade Rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in iron furniture. Ordered in both flint and percussion ignition, by the U. S. Government and many private firms, Leman rifles were the favorite of Indians across the frontier. "Of the 410 guns captured from the Sioux and Cheyenne in the final campaigns of 1877, 94 were Leman rifles." (Henry E. Leman - Riflemaker, by Charles E. Hanson, Jr., The Museum of the Fur Trade Quarterly, Volume 20, Number 4, Chadron, Nebraska, Winter 1984.) Hand made by noted contemporary builder Jack Garner, and signed on the top flat of the barrel. This rifle features a .54 caliber 36" barrel fitted to a Siler Mountain percussion lock. Trigger reach is 13-7/8", weight is 7.8 pounds.

The .54 caliber, 15/16" straight octagon barrel has a 36" overall length. The bore is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. the barrel is finished to matted textured brown, and there are some bright spots in the finish from use. The front sight is a tall iron blade dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. The tall semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. The maker's signature J Garner is engraved on the top flat of the barrel.

This maple full stock is finished to a medium brown with golden undertone and finished to a satin sheen. The stock has a few small handling marks from use. A traditional browned iron buttplate is fitted, which is very common on this style of rifle. The heel has worn bright from contact with the ground while loading, which is very common on iron mounted rifles. When viewed from the top, the lock panels are slim and trim, and the wrist flows gracefully back to the tapered comb. The single tang bolt passes through the straight tang to engage the trigger plate below. A short browned iron toeplate protects the critical toe, and is mounted with two small screws. The browned iron triggerguard is pinned into position. The forearm is very slender with a very correct oval shape as found on antique Leman rifles. The black synthetic ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for cleaning and loading accessories. The browned ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe are round and smooth with no decoration. A short browned iron muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The cheek view shows the simple square raised cheek piece, a comfortable rest for a left hand shooter. The sideplate inlay is inlet flush with the wood. The lock bolt has a flat head that correctly stands proud of the surface.

Ignition is provided by this percussion Siler Mountain caplock notched to accept the drum. This nice lock uses Siler internals, so spare parts are readily available if needed. The lock is browned to match the barrel, and we note the plate stands slightly proud of the wood. The lock has a smooth nice trigger release, short hammer travel, and fast lock time. The well supported drum is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple for No. 11 cap. A nickel silver flash cup directs cap spray away from the breech. Order our nipple RST-S if you require a spare. R.E. Davis Double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers.

If you seek an 1840 - 1880 era left hand percussion plains rifle, consider this nice hand made rifle.
